How to become a Lash Artist in Australia

How to become a Lash Artist in Australia.

When I completed my first eyelash extension course back in 2018, the industry was only just beginning.

I was lucky enough to have had an amazing mentor who guided me every step of the way and whom I still turn to for support to this day.

If you, like so many other people, are sick of going to a 9-5 for someone else and making them money - then you’re not alone. If you have a passion for making women feel beautiful, integrity, an eye for detail and a love for creativity then lashing may just be the career for you. However, it can be confusing. Where do you start?

Well first, becoming a lash artist involves several steps, including training, practice, marketing and building your client base. Here’s a general guide to get you started:

1. Research

Learn about the profession and what it entails. Understand the different types of lash extensions, techniques, and tools.

2. Training

Research reputable training academies and read their reviews. In Australia, the eyelash extension industry is not regulated. This means that it is more important than ever to research and find a quality academy.
Are they online? In person? A combination? How many hours of hands-on or in person training are they offering? Are they accredited or insured? Will they offer ongoing support throughout your career? Reach out to them and ask these questions.

3. Insurance

Having insurance as a lash artist is crucial for several reasons such as liability protection, property damage and client trust.

4. Practice

Gain experience by practicing on friends, family, or mannequins. Building a portfolio of your work can help attract future clients.
You can advertise as a new lash tech on community boards and charge at a reduced introductory rate. This is a great option as you are still working on paying clients and they may just end up sticking with you for life.

5. Supplies

Invest in high-quality lash extension supplies, including lashes, adhesives, tweezers, and other tools. You get what you pay for and it is crucial that you are using the best quality adhesives to ensure the safety of you and your client.

6. Set Up

Decide where you will offer your services. This could be at a salon, spa, or your own home-based studio. Make sure that wherever you decide to have your space is well ventilated and has air conditioning as you will need to be able to manipulate the temperature and humidity of your work environment.

7. Marketing

Promote your services through social media, a professional website, and word of mouth. As mentioned before, community boards like those on Facebook that are targeted to your suburb or region is a great place to start advertising.

8. Continued Education

Stay updated on the latest trends and techniques by attending workshops, webinars, and advanced training courses. The lash industry is forever changing and new styles and products are being created everyday.

If you decide to become an Eyelash Artist you will have an incredible skill and career. You can have an amazing work-life balance and your earning potential is unlimited. Be sure to practice self care and you will have a long and rewarding lash journey!
